The ASP-rated Golden Breed Mens Pro at the Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Global Surf Industries, will be the highlight of the Australian leg of the ASP Australasian Longboard Tour, with many of the best longboarders in the world hoping to wrest the Noosa title from California’s Taylor Jensen.

The inaugural Australia-New Zealand tour begins at Sandy Bay, New Zealand in early February, before jumping the ditch for the 1-star LQS Golden Breed Pro in Noosa, immediately followed by the Malfunction Pro in Kingscliff and, in July the winter Whalebone Classic in WA. With points from three of the four events counting towards final pro rankings, the February-March season is likely to entice a big international field.

The icing on the cake for touring pros is that the New Zealand LQS is part of a five-event domestic tour sponsored by Hyundai, with an additional $20,000 prize money up for grabs between January and March. Local longboard pros like Josh Constable and Jackson Winter have already found that the Kiwi tour is fun and lucrative, and they are sure to be joined by many others in 2011.

The traffic across the Tasman the other way is also expected to be substantial, as Kiwi longboarders aim to make it on the international stage, with the winner of the Hyundai Tour receiving an all-expenses-paid trip to Noosa plus entry into the Golden Breed Pro.

It was also confirmed this week that Revo Eyewear will sponsor the women’s pro LQS event at Noosa. More details on the Revo Women’s Pro soon.

A total of $10,000 will be offered in prize money at the Noosa Festival, with other money events including the Noserider Pro, the Seaglass Project Finless Challenge and the Laguna Bay Longboards SUPS Pro and 5KM race.

FOR SURF FESTIVAL MAJOR CONCERT

Early-bird tickets are now on sale for Zinc 96.1 Night In The Woods, the major music event of the 2011 Noosa Festival of Surfing. The six-hour concert in Noosa Woods Park will feature an incredible line-up of bands and solo acts in the surf-roots-rock genre.

Headlining the concert is roots sensation Dallas Frasca, dubbed the new Janis Joplin. Dallas has been getting extraordinary acclaim for her festival gigs over the past year, and this one, in the beautiful environment of Noosa Woods, is not to be missed.

Also on the bill are the ever popular Band of Frequencies, whose brand of funk has featured on so many recent surf film soundtracks, they have become synonymous with the sound of surf. LAGUNA BAY LONGBOARDS STAND-UP PADDLE DIVISION NOOSA’S BIGGEST EVER

Noosa’s own Laguna Bay Longboards will sponsor the biggest ever stand up paddle division at the 2011 Noosa Festival of Surfing. In a joint announcement, Laguna’s Tully St John and festival director Phil Jarratt said the expansion of the division was in keeping with the tremendous growth of stand up around the world.

The four-year-old Stand Up Paddle Pro surfing event will be joined by amateur divisions for seniors (over 45) and women, plus a 5-kilometre “loop” race on Laguna Bay prior to the Festival’s opening ceremony on Sunday, 13 March.

“We wanted the SUPS at the Noosa Festival to reflect what’s happening everywhere in the world of stand up,” said Tully St John. “That is, everyone is doing it, from surfers of all ages to serious watermen and surf paddlers, from kids to mums who see it as a great workout. Laguna Bay Longboards SUPS will cater to all of them, and we expect to attract stand up paddlers from all over.”

Festival director Phil Jarratt said he was delighted that a local surf company had come in as sponsor. “Under his various surfboard brands, Tully has been a major player in the local industry for quite a while now, and it’s great to see him developing SUPS alongside traditional surfboards. While stand up has developed a life of its own in many land-locked places, on our coasts we want to see it grow side by side with surfing, and so does our governing body, Surfing Australia. We’re all from the same tribe, and the Laguna Bay SUPS division at the Noosa Festival will demonstrate that.”

Tully said he had been inspired by recent stand up paddle races, such as the Battle of the Paddle in Hawaii and California, to work with surf club officials in creating a loop course close to the beach, so that spectators could watch the entire race “up close and personal”. Competitors will paddle five times around a one-kilometre triangular course, punctuating each circuit with a beach sprint. “Racing is always thrilling when you’ve got the paddle in your hands,” Tully said, “But we want to make it just as exciting for the spectators.” The Battle of the Paddle at Doheny Beach, California in early October, broke spectator records with almost 10,000 people gathering to watch a thrilling race, with more than 800 competitors in the water.

BIG WEEKEND OF TEAM EVENTS TO KICK OFF NOOSA 2011

Three separate teams events will herald the start of the 2011 Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Global Surf Industries, with some insane surfing going down over the weekend March 11-12, ahead of the official opening ceremony at sunset on the Sunday.

Festival director Phil Jarratt said that a new-look celebrity teams event and an international club challenge would join the hugely popular Family Challenge. “Teams events are always a great crowd-pleaser and a wonderful way to get competitors wound up for the week ahead, so we’ve devised a couple of beauties.”

The International Clubs Invitational will feature 16 of the world’s leading longboard clubs up against each other in an action-packed event that will use a successive surfer format. Said Jarratt: “There’s been a lot of interest expressed already by clubs on both sides of the Pacific, and we think this is going to be a hotly contested event. This year we had Noosa versus Malibu, next year both those great club teams will be taking on 14 others.”

The Corporate Cup will be the major charity fundraiser of the festival, with companies around Australia invited to field a team. Each corporate team will have two staff members and a guest surfer, with the guests expected to number world and Australian champions and other celebrities.

The Family Challenge enters its third year at the Noosa Festival with parent/child combos from around the world hot to win the prestigious trophy.
Teams events will begin on Saturday, March 11, with the Corporate Cup expected to conclude that day, the Clubs Invitational concluding on Sunday and the first round of the Family Challenge ahead of the opening ceremony.

East Coast Surfing - USA

Many of the Top 34 call one of the Mainland coasts home, but unless their last name is Gudauskas, they haven’t surfed their home break on Tour. But with the plethora of breaks the US coastlines offer, are there any spots besides Lower Trestles that are worthy enough for the world’s best? The ASP thinks so.

According to the 2011 ASP World Tour schedule, a new stop will be added at “East Coast, USA,” nestled snugly between Teahupoo and Trestles on the contest calendar. With over 3,000 miles of coast from Maine to the southern tip of Florida, “East Coast, USA” is just about as ambiguous as you can get. The ASP refused to comment further, as they probably have their hands full trying to figure out what no one before them has: how to predict a hurricane. Without one, most East Coast breaks look impotent compared to the rest of Tour schedule, which includes posts like Jeffrey’s Bay and Pipeline. However, the US is arguably the heart of the surfing world and a new Tour stop could be huge for their red, white, and blue surf fans.

The decision, however, has undoubtedly raised many questions. Why the East Coast? Are the wave possibilities there the best the US has to offer? What factors go into choosing a WT venue? Aren’t there better options on the West Coast? The short answer is yes, but the long answer is a bit more complex. Two months ago, ASP officials and surf forecasters were contacted about the potential for a new World Tour stop, but nothing they said seemed to point to an impending East Coast event. “The continental US enjoys a slew of excellent wave venues that could host an ASP World Tour event,” said the ASP International Media Manager Dave Prodan. “The Eastern seaboard is home to several solid waves as well – albeit, consistency is a problem.” A lack of consistency can be a pretty big problem. Lay days, heat restarts, and groveling competitions can make a contest at one of the best spots in the world look like an attempt at a Lake Michigan Pro. This factor is what makes a competition at one of the premier East Coast breaks seem like a gamble.

“I think there are less than 20 spots in the world that meet the standards for a WCT event,” said ASP North America Tour Manager Brian Robbins. That’s an incredibly short list, and one that I would be shocked to find any East Coast spots on. Although the hurricane swells that hit the East can make some of the most gorgeous tubes imaginable, consistency remains king in the contest world.

Each year, on just 24-40 hours' notice, top surfers from around the world descend upon the cold waters of Half Moon Bay — at Northern California's most famed surf break — for the chance to compete in the Mavericks Surf Contest and ride what many consider to be "the most dangerous waves in the world."

Bluff Area Off Limits
The small section of bluff overlooking the "surf contest" area is very steep and can be muddy. In previous years, the viewing area got extremely crowded during the surfing event — Professional News Agencies and Photographers arrived early to stake out and take over the best viewing locations. As of 2011, there will be no beach access. Crowds will be directed back toward Princeton-by-the-Sea, where local hotels and restaurants will host viewing parties.

Parking can be horrendous and ticketing is aggressively enforced. In the past, the viewing areas were a long walk from most parking locations. Princeton-on-the Sea hotels and restaurants will be hosting viewing parties — parking will be limited, so arrive early.

Jordy Smith was crowned the Billabong Pro J-Bay 2010 champion at Jeffreys Bay today, convincingly defeating Adam Melling from Australia in the final to become the first South African surfer to win an ASP World Tour event since the legendary Shaun Tomson back in the mid-eighties and cementing the 22 year-old Durbanite’s position at the top of the ASP World Title Race Rankings.

Smith’s maiden victory and ascension to the rankings lead in home waters could not have been scripted better, coming on master statesman Nelson Mandela’s birthday and adding further momentum to the tremendous outpouring of South African sporting pride following the successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup.

Coming into Stop No. 4 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour ranked ASP World No. 2, Smith was the form surfer throughout the event. He stamped his authority on the final from the outset, locking in excellent scores of 8.90 and 9.03 in the first five minutes to leave his opponent in a combination situation and needing to improve on both his scores throughout the 35 minute match-up.

“This is the best day of my life,” a beaming Smith said on the podium. “The crowd on the beach has been supporting me the last few days and hearing the cheers and the Vuvuzelas just get me fired up to perform. It feels like they’re pushing me along. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

“I knew the swell was dying and I had to take advantage of every wave that came through,” Smith said of the final. “Adam (Melling) is such a dangerous surfer. He’s been in form all day and I knew that if he got the waves, he would get the scores. I went out there knowing I had to open up strong.”

Smith defeated Nate Yeomans (USA), Owen Wright (AUS) and Adriano De Souza (BRA) before facing his biggest test in the semifinal against Bede Durbidge (AUS). The experienced Australian seemingly had a berth in the final sewn up with the swell dropping and less than three minutes remaining. However, urged to catch a hip- high wave by his advisers on the dunes, Smith raced down the line and punted a high-risk ‘Superman’ aerial that he landed successfully and performed a couple more moves before the ride ended.

In a classic never-say-die effort before the scores for the ride were even in, Smith then paddled into what was to be the last wave of the heat which opened up and allowed him to execute a series of progressive manoeuvres. Needing 7.41 to advance, his score of 7.93 resulted in rapturous applause and a cacophony of vuvuzelas and cheering from the packed partisan crowd basking in the mid-winter sunshine.

“I’m still not too sure what happened – it’s all a blur,” Smith said of the semifinal. “I got that first one where I did the little grab air that I didn’t think was good, but the judges scored the whole wave pretty well. Then I backed it up and put everything I had into it.”

Melling’s “Cinderella” climb to the finals was nothing short of sensational. Rated a lowly 41st on the ASP World Title Race rankings heading into Jeffreys Bay, the 2010 ASP Dream Tour rookie who had not won a single heat in the first three events of the year powered his way through five rounds of competition, including defeating compatriot and 2007 Billabong Pro J-Bay winner Taj Burrow in the semifinals. His runner-up finish sees the Australian bumped up to ASP World No. 19, well inside the safety zone for the dreaded mid-year reduction in the field from 45 to 32.

“The ocean didn’t cooperate with me in the final so that’s a shame, but I couldn’t be happier,” Melling said. “We had amazing waves and to get the best result of my career is huge. I came into Jeffreys with a long road ahead if I was to make the mid-year cut-off, and now that I’m 19th, I feel like I have a bit of a buffer heading into Tahiti. I worked really hard to get here and I want to stay here.”

Durbidge suffered one of the hardest losses of the event, having victory snatched from him by Smith’s last-minute heroics. Despite the bitter loss, Durbidge’s equal third place finish vaults him from 10th to 7th on the ASP World Title Race rankings heading into the fifth event of the year.

“I had him comboed with only four minutes to go,” Durbidge said of the semifinal against Smith. “He took off on that one-footer and pulled a ‘Superman’ air and finished off well, then came out and got another one. I think he got two waves in a minute or something. It’s a hard way to lose, but a semifinal is my best result of the year and it’s something to build on. The focus is on Tahiti now.”

Burrow consistently wowed audiences with his performance from Round 1 onwards, collecting the event’s highest heat total of 18.87 out of 20 in yesterday’s Round 4 to win the Nixon WTA award of a US $10 000 custom built Nixon timepiece. Despite today’s semifinal loss at the hands of Melling, Burrow moves up to the ASP World No. 2 ranking heading into Tahiti.

Sean Holmes’ rampaging run through the event was finally ended by Durbidge in the quarterfinals. The 32 year-old wildcard from Cape Town, who eliminated former ASP World Champions Kelly Slater (USA) and Andy Irons (HAW) yesterday, came within half a point of upsetting Durbidge too, but came up short in the small wind affected waves early this morning.

“The way these guys train and their ability to perform in conditions like this is so good,” Holmes commented after his loss. “On top of his ability, I think Bede (Durbidge) is one of the hardest guys in the world to beat. He’s smart and he’s powerful.”

“Yesterday was a very special day for me. Not so much in terms of my surfing as I’ve definitely surfed better, but more so from a tactical perspective. Kelly (Slater) and Andy (Irons) are the best guys on their days, but I feel like I surfed smart and anticipated what both of them would do in their situations. It paid off and it was a great day for me.”

The superb surf produced at Supertubes for the first three days of the event, and the smaller but still contestable waves today, saw the Billabong Pro J-Bay 2010 completed in the first four days of the 11 day waiting period for the first time since it became an ASP World Tour rated event in 1996.

On this planet there are certain waves that define what kind of surfer you are. Some guys go by “Pipe specialist,” while an even more select few are referred to as “good at J-Bay.” For over four decades now, the best right-hand pointbreak in the world, Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, has been one of surfing’s most defining proving grounds. Once again, it will be a momentous affair. Often sited as the turning point of the ASP World Tour season, the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, has the capacity to make or break a world title run.

“Kelly’s obviously the man to beat out there,” says Taj Burrow. “At J-Bay last year he had four wins already, but things are a little bit different this year, and that makes things really interesting as we head down the back stretch of the tour.

With its wide-open, racetrack walls, and cavernous tube sections, J-Bay is an elite surfer’s dream line-up. Think of the names that have carved themselves a place on the historic walls: Shaun Tomson, Mark Occhilupo, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson, and Taj Burrow, some of the best surfers to step on a board in the last 30 years.

“Without a doubt, J-Bay is one of my favourite waves on tour,” says Joel Parkinson. “I have had some good results there but haven’t won since 1999. I am looking forward to surfing there again—it is a special place and I am going to be giving it my all this year.”

During Easter week in 1964 a group of six Cape Town surfers pulled up to the dunes and rocky point of Jeffreys Bay and rode “Supertubes,” for the first time. They knew they’d found something good, but probably never imagined how good. 45 years later there’s over $340,000 in prize money at stake, but more importantly, there’s a chance to have your name etched among legends and be known as “good at J-Bay.”

World’s best surfers head for Jeffreys Bay in July as Billabong Pro goes green

The world’s top 45 ranked professional surfers will be heading for the renowned waves of Jeffreys Bay in July for the 24th edition of the Billabong Pro, Stop No.5 of 10 on the 2010 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour and the first South African surfing event to make a concerted effort to reduce its impact on climate change.

Supertubes, the 300 meter stretch of coastline universally acknowledged as one of the planet’s top 10 high performance surf breaks, will again be the venue for what has become Africa’s most prestigious and lucrative surfing tournament.

Scheduled for 15-25 July, the 11-day window period allows organizers to select the best possible conditions to guarantee spectacular action during the three days of competition required to determine the champion.

Billabong is taking another step on its environmental sustainability journey by utilizing the immense interest in the event to heighten awareness of local and global surf communities to the challenge of climate change, and how we all need to become part of the solution

"At the 2010 Billabong Pro it’s not just the waves at Supers that will be green, we will be making sure our event is too,” says Peter Nicholson, Marketing Manager for Billabong South Africa. “Together with our partners Cleaner Climate we’ve calculated our carbon footprint and have identified and implemented numerous green initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of the event.”

These initiatives include using renewable energy, biodegradable food and beverage containers and paper not plastic bags along with waste and wetsuit recycling. The remaining emissions will be offset using Kyoto compliant carbon credits to ensure that the 2010 Billabong Pro is a low carbon, climate friendly event.

“I always look forward to J-Bay,” Parkinson said recently. “There is such a good vibe surrounding the contest and on our lay days we can enjoy so many different activities. You never get bored in South Africa and when Supers is on, there is no other place I would rather be in July!”

All the action will be covered via web casts featuring live scoring, video footage with multiple camera angles, slow-motion replays, video on demand highlights of previous heats and interviews accompanied by a choice of expert commentary in English, Spanish. Portuguese and French.

Third Consecutive Lay Day for Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons

PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Saturday, December 11, 2010) – A third consecutive lay day has been called for the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the third and final jewel of the Vans Triple Crown (an ASP Specialty Series), with flat conditions continuing at the infamous Banzai Pipeline.

“Unfortunately we have poor conditions at Pipeline again today and will have to call another lay day,” Richie Porta, ASP International Head Judge said. “We’re tracking a small swell that’s expected to arrive in the middle of next week that should bring Pipeline back to life, but we’ll still come back tomorrow morning to check conditions.”

The Billabong Pipe Masters launched into competition on the opening day of the waiting period and saw current Vans Triple Crown ratings leader Joel Parkinson (AUS), 29, move one step closer to clinching his third trifecta title.

In addition to Vans Triple Crown action, the opening day of competition witnessed the molding of the majority of the 2011 ASP Dream Tour roster when several surfers hanging in the balance of requalification failed to meet the result needed to retain their position on next year’s ASP Dream Tour.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be defending Billabong Pipe Master Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, up against Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 22, in the opening heat of Round 3.

The story behind the "Rapid Fire"

Let me tell you why we added this shortboard to our line. I was testing out the NexGen epoxy over on the North Shore of Oahu with some former pros. After a couple of sessions I gave this shortboard to a buddy of mine there named Kevin.

Now, Kevin is a great surfer who has grown up in HI and spent his entire life in the water. Anyways, at first when I gave it to him I wasn't sure how he liked it. In fact, after the first session on it, he wasn't sure he liked it either. You see, he hadn't surfed any thing like this before. His comment was. "It's soooo snappy brah."

I told him to keep it for another session and report back to me in a couple of days. Well guess what, not only did he fall in love with it but, he even bought that very board from me before I left the islands. Now this is huge because this is a guy that has access to just about any shaper in the world.

After that, I new we had to add it to our line. So here it is, the "Rapid Fire". Tested and tried on the North Shore of Oahu... If shredding is your goal and your medium built, this ones for you.
